Whispering Woods Golf Club, opened over thirty years ago, still stands as one of Ellis Maples most beloved designs and a local favorite among all Sandhills area courses. Ellis, inspired by a picturesque, rolling track of land in the Whispering Woods Golf Course Pinehurst area, carved out another challenge for golfers in this incredible golf mecca. His work, the Whispering Woods Golf Club course, stands as a credit to him and a pleasure for many.

Dan Maples, son of Ellis and renowned golf course architect in his own right, described Whispering Woods this way: "It is a golf course designed with the average player in mind, but good players won't find it a pushover. The well groomed condition of the course enhances the design and complements the roll of the land. Golfers experience left to right, short shots, long shots, uphill and downhill holes. And the quick bent grass green will keep you honest."

This course was renovated in 1994. Additional trees and sand bunkers have now been added to the course design, making it an even more demanding challenge. Also, most of the greens were reconstructed. Each hole presents a new look and demands skillful shot making to meticulously, manicured greens. The natural undulating terrain will often leave you with some interesting lies in the fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes as well.

Average sized greens, but all are slanted (not undulating) and running so your putts will make up for the fact that the course measures only 6,300+ from the tips. Two of the three par five's are reachable, but you must get your drives over 260 and in the middle of the fairway, which are pretty narrow at 30-35 yards wide.

Whispering Woods Golf Course is a straight forward in your face course. Fair amount of sand and water, dog-legs to the left and right, some short par three's and some long par three's and for the most part, the course is cut straight through the pines of the Sandhills, just what you'd expect.

Leidigh, who has worked with course architect Dan Maples for 12 years as CEO of management operations, is leaving his job there effective immediately.
