Thomas Pottery
Thomas Pottery is a joint exploration of functional and decorative
stoneware. Scott specializes in platters, bowls, pitchers and vases. Bobbie
enjoys hand building. She makes serving pieces, leaf trays, tri-footed designs,
tiled mirrors and planters of cats, rabbits and chickens. Her designs are
created from flat pieces of clay and then sculpted into different shapes and
designs. She enhances her work by using handmade stamps and hand painting. Scott
and Bobbie also do collaborative designs by combining their skills to create
even more unique pieces.
Bobbie has had a love for art throughout her entire life. All through school,
teachers encouraged her to develop her artistic skills. She was lucky to find a
fully equipped ceramics art department during high school and took every art
class offered each year. This was when she fell in love with clay. Her first
pottery pieces were thrown on a handmade kick wheel and were tall bud vases. She
explored many techniques using clay during this time. Her senior year she won
best of show for a pair of owl sculptures. She also received recognition in
other art medias including pastel portraits, acrylic and oil painting, weaving,
and needlework.
In 1999 Bobbie purchased her first pottery wheel. This was the beginning of a life
long dream to become a fulltime artist. She spent several years working during
the day and making pottery at night and on the weekends. She and her husband
built a studio beside their home in Carthage, NC in 2001. This provided a
wonderful workspace and sales area although most of her work was sold at craft
shows. Many potters told her it would only be a matter of time before you will
have to make a decision to make pottery full-time. When she moved to Seagrove,
NC in 2006 she started her new life as a fulltime ceramic artist making handmade
pottery. Each year she attends several workshops to further her exploration in
clay.
“I truly believe everyone has an
artistic gift. I try to encourage everyone to explore his or her individual
talent. I am lucky I found mine early in life as a visual artist. When I look at
something I see beyond the surface, and see shapes, colors and textures that may
be hidden to others. These images might evolve in my work as a new stamp design
or glaze color combination. The pleasure I receive from my work is to see
the smiles and laughs my designs give people and the curiosity of figuring out
what I used to make a design. This connection between people is essential to
sharing our gifts with one another.”
In 2006 they sold their home and studio in Carthage and purchased a farm in
Seagrove, NC. Scott and Bobbie love being active members of a working community
of potters. Their property has several farm buildings one of which was renovated
into a new studio. The studio consists of 1200 square foot of wonderful open
space with lots of glass and a cathedral ceiling. The windows overlook a
beautiful pond and landscaped area which they enjoy every day. The sales gallery
is a cabin that they built several years ago and moved to the property. It has
400 square feet of open display space with wood floors and high ceiling. The
studio is separated from the sales gallery, and is visible so you can see the
process of creating pottery. Extending the roofline to join these two buildings
together gave created an awesome covered welcome area.
Thomas Pottery is also one of several local craftsman participating in this
year’s “Seagrove Potters For Peace – 200 Cups of Tea” event. Thirteen Seagrove Area
Potteries have created special drinking vessels as a fundraiser for American
peace activist Greg Mortenson, whose #1 NY Times Bestseller “Three Cups of Tea –
One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time” explains his own
efforts for peace.
Mortenson, through his Central Asia Institute (CAI), has built hundreds of
schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where illiterate and
impoverished children are prey to recruitment by terrorist organizations.
On
Saturday, August 15, 200 teacups, mugs and tumblers will be offered for sale,
with the full purchase price being donated to CAI. Many items are specially
inscribed for this event. Copies of Mortenson’s book in adult, young adult and
children’s versions will be for sale at several potteries.
Thomas Pottery also offers families
and groups the chance to experience expression through clay with parties,
through wheel turning or hand-building. Behind the scenes pottery experience is
fun, educational and an inspiring time to spend with family, friends and
co-workers. It’s a great event for birthday parties, team building, social
groups, networking, etc. Thomas Pottery offers a large studio space to
accommodate groups up to 8 people. Each party participant will have the
opportunity to make several pieces of pottery finished and glazed in a
dinnerware safe glaze. You are welcome to bring snacks, a picnic and your choice
of beverage. They start your event with a brief orientation of the studio and
gallery, a demonstration of the technique you choose will follow. Plan your
casual affair by giving them a call at (336) 879-4145 to discuss your group
needs and reserve a date. Prices for parties vary.
