The Bluff Golf Links
The Bluff Golf Links in Pinebluff NC is a place where golfers can enjoy a relaxing
and affordable round of golf in their favorite pair of jeans, but don’t expect to be
bowled over by design or condition of this Sandhills area course.
So just leave your plaid pants and dress shorts behind, along with your expectations when
you come to play the Bluff.
The Bluff Golf Links doesn’t get a whole lot of
attention, but hopefully under Maples Golf Management, it can be revived into a
true Pinehurst area status course.
Maples Golf Management, headed by
architect Dan Maples, has recently taken over the club and is in the process of
making things better at The Bluff Golf Links. One thing is certain, the golf
will always be cheap and the course will continue to improve.
Most golfers that have visited The Bluff Golf Links over the last couple of years
probably haven’t been back. The course isn’t fantastic and it’s about 10 minutes
south of Aberdeen on the outskirts.
The 18-hole "Sandhills" course
at the Bluff Golf Links facility in Pinebluff, North Carolina features 7,094
yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 72.9
and it has a slope rating of 134. Designed by Frank Hicks/Russell Breeder, this Sandhills golf course opened in 1971. Dan Maples Design, Inc. manages this
facility.
Overall this course plays a bit more difficult than you’d expect, at least from
the back tees. Trouble surrounds many of the greens, and there is substantial
yardage from tee to green.
Some holes utilize some elevation changes and water to keep things interesting,
but overall it’s not one of our favorite courses. Especially with so many to
choose from in this phenomenal golf mecca in the Sandhills of NC. The bluff
has the typical beauty of the Sandhills area with rolling hills and gorgeous
pines. It just needs a little TLC.
Maintenance and upkeep, we’re sure will improve, once Dan Maples puts his touch
on some of the design elements and condition. Some of the fairways are a bit
rutted, and the bunkers are in pretty bad shape. Rounds are very affordable, and
it’s usually not crowded. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The
Greenleafe Inn on site is an affordable place to stay.
If you’ve got some time to kill, and you want a cheap round to practice some
shots in your bag, stop by The Bluff, and keep your eyes open for future
improvements. If Dan Maples has anything to do with it, this diamond in the
rough won't stay that way for long. We just hope the owners will let Dan do what
he does best, and not try and limit his expertise. It's certainly needed.
