Southern Pines Golf Club
Southern Pines Golf Club, or the Southern Pines Country Club course, is an
original Donald Ross design that remains mostly unchanged from it's opening in 1906. Although the first 9 holes were
completed in 1906, the second 9 holes were not completed until 1912. These
18 holes is what remains and is played today.
Ross originally designed 36 holes
for the Southern Pines Country Club. Nine
holes have been abandoned over the years, and the last nine
apparently were designed, but never built when the depression of
1929 hit.
Southern Pines Golf Club has some great history on the course
here, and in the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst.
A legendary golf course architect,
and to many the father of golf, Donald Ross carved 18 of perhaps
the most rewarding golf holes in the Sandhills region. A true
shotmaker's golf course, Ross gives players options. At 6300
yards, Southern Pines Golf Club does not measure up to today's
length of courses, but it makes up for it through a variety of
shots from the tee and even more challenges into the greens.
The result continues to prove the
course's notoriety as the most entertaining 18 holes of golf in
the area. A throwback to days gone by, where bump and run shots
were the norm and tee shots demanded precision over length.
One trip around this Ross gem will
leave you wanting more, not just at that moment, but rather each time you tee it
up. This is how golf should be played. The memories are more vivid and will last
a lifetime.
For
many years, since the 1940's the course was known to most locals as the Elks
Club course, because the Elks Lodge owned the course. The Elks Club course,
Southern Pines Country Club, Southern Pines Golf Club, whatever you want to call
it, it's pure Donald Ross golf at it's finest.
You'll thoroughly enjoy playing this piece of
history, and getting
a feel for one of the greatest golf design minds in the history of golf.
Driving the streets of this old
neighborhood and just looking at some of the old trees and landscapes, you’ll
begin to get a feel for just how far back this community goes. Some of the
original cottages are speckled throughout the community, with several of them
already renovated. Most of the development here didn’t take place for some years
after the course was opened in 1906.
It is rare to find a Donald Ross course in such original condition. In the course's
nearly 100 year history, Southern Pines Golf Club is another Donald Ross
classic. Unlike some of the other Ross designs in the Pinehurst area, this
course offers a unique playability at an affordable price, making it a perfect
choice for your next golf trip.
