Pinewild CC Golf Pinehurst
Pinewild CC golf in Pinehurst is nothing short of fantastic. This beautiful
gated community has 2 world class 18 hole courses and a nine hole practice
course. The notorius "Magnolia" golf course has hosted numerous professional
qualifying events, US Amateur Championship, USGA events and PGA tour school
qualifying. The Holly course is an incredible Gary Player design that
compliments the Magnolia course perfectly, often known as "Gary Player's gift to
Pinehurst". And the 9 hole Azalea par 3 course is a great place to work on your
short game. The landscape in Pinewild is stunning, and this community of
exclusive homes and estates rounds out this golf community.
The Magnolia Course
Originally designed by Gene Hamm, the 18-Hole, par 72 Magnolia Course opened to
rave reviews in 1989, and within two months was ranked as one of the top 50
courses in the entire southeastern United States by Golf Week.
The Magnolia has seen a complete multi-million dollar
redesign, to include new greens complexes with Crenshaw Bent Grass, bunkers and
cart paths.
The result is a truly fantastic lay-out with emphasis on
risk-reward golf.
In an area that boasts numerous award winning courses, the
Magnolia remains a local favorite. The course is characterized by vast elevation
changes, generous driving areas, and spacious challenging greens. In the summer
edition of the 2003 Pinehurst Magazine, the Magnolia was ranked as the fifth
best course in the area, by the 43 PGA Golf Professionals.
Locals aren’t the only ones who know a great course when they
play it. LPGA players heaped praise on the course when the LPGA’s Pinewild
Women’s Championship was contested in 1995. The Magnolia has been a
qualifying site for numerous US Open Championships, the US Amateur Championship,
as well as PGA Tour School Qualifying.
With the back tees measuring almost 7,500 yards, we like to
say that the NEW Magnolia is "NO BARK, BUT ALL BITE". You've got to try and get
in to play The Magnolia to understand, it ranks right up there with the best in
Pinehurst.
"The Magnolia is more your typical Pinehurst course and it's
always a couple shots tougher than Holly, only because it's a little longer and
the greens are bigger," Little said. "There are no tricks to Magnolia, but it's
a difficult course to score on compared to Holly. It's difficult to get it under
par at Magnolia." Even for the pros. Magnolia was the site of U.S. Open two
years running. Of the 250 golfers that came through each year, less than a
handful broke par.
The Holly Course
A special signature design by golf’s legendary world traveler, Gary Player, the
Holly course is the perfect compliment to the Magnolia. The Holly features fewer
bunkers, more water and smaller greens. Vast areas of longleaf pines were left
untouched, and the course features numerous natural waste bunkers. The
design utilizes the property’s many lakes, ponds and streams that wind through
numerous wooded areas throughout the course. Multiple tees present a variety of
challenges, but the course is definitely playable for golfers of all skill
levels.
The Holly is proud to have hosted the Carolinas PGA Pro-Pro
Championship, as well as numerous other Carolinas Golf Association and USGA
qualifying events.
Holly has more forced carries and,
unlike the Magnolia, you can't always roll it up on the green. Still, it's
shorter and a tad easier.
"With Holly, you can get on a roll and make a few birdies if
you take some chances," Little said. "I've always described it as a fun,
risk/reward layout that doesn't overly penalize you. You can take your chances,
but it doesn't beat you up. That's what's fun about it."
Like Holly's No. 16: it's a 458-yard par-4 with a dry creek
bed fronting the green and bunkers right and left; the bulkheaded green falls
off right to a bunker. Your second shot is slightly downhill and with the pin
tucked behind the right bunker, it's a very difficult approach. There is a
bail-out area to the left.
"It's a nice course, I just don't understand why they
over-seed some fairways and not others," said Mike Bailey, a Canadian pro
playing the course for the first time. "But, it's a really good layout; it has
some interesting holes."
Little said there was a reason for interval over-seeding: "A
few years ago, we relied a lot more on outside resort play and we would
over-seed every hole," he said. "But, now we have 930 members, 700 homes, and we
don't rely on that much outside play.
"We'll elect not to over-seed the fairways in the sun, so some
holes the grass can come back better in late spring and early summer."
The Azalea Course
As a group, these holes represent some of the finest par-3 holes you will ever play, using every iron in your bag
to play them. The course traverses natural, rolling land that is tucked within
the back nine of the Magnolia course. The Azalea plays to a nine-hole par 27,
but two sets of tees enables you to get 18 different looks.
Donald Ross style bunkers, that appear as though they are
greenside, but are in fact up to fifteen yards short of the putting green, are
scattered throughout the course. After the sixty minutes, you’ll know you didn’t
just play a nine-hole par 3 course; you’ll describe it to your friends as a
“collection” of great par 3 holes.

Teaching
Philosophy
Many golf schools and instructors attempt to teach golf to people.
Our approach to instruction is to put people - like you - first. The teaching
philosophy has endured because our system is anchored in the belief that
we teach people... to play golf.
The difference is
more than one of semantics. When attending a school at Pinewild, your game is
individually evaluated and, while emphasizing the basic principles of golf, we
tailor our instruction to meet your individual needs. More specifically, we
relate the dynamics of the golf swing in an understandable manner and we explain
how these fundamental laws apply to your specific swing.
When this
philosophy is applied to your golf game, the contrasts between the Pinewild
teaching system and other teaching methods soon become obvious - especially in
your performance on the golf course.
