Pinehurst
Pinehurst is a name that instills many wonderful
thoughts, in minds and hearts around the world. There aren't too many people who
haven't heard of Pinehurst. Home of Golf, Home of American Golf, Golf
Capital of the US, "one of our favorite vacation spots",........home. No
matter what name you know it by, you obviously already know that it's a
magical place.
And many who have visited, immediately start
planning their
return trip, and even their moving plans to enjoy this quality of life
and small town feel that has been forgotten in so many other towns and
cities around the country. The sense of pride, exclusivity,
harmony with nature, and world class golf has been handed down from
generation to generation.
But golf is just one thing that makes this place so special.
From the time that
James Walker Tufts
created his "health resort" years ago, Pinehurst has drawn visitors and new
neighbors from all walks of life. The caretakers and residents of this
gorgeous place have taken great care to preserve our
history
and quality of life. In the early days of Pinehurst NC, as the migration of
the well to do from the northern states was on, the draw to the area was the
beauty, the slower pace of life, the golf, the healing atmosphere and the peace of
mind. All things that naturally preserve the surroundings.
The
Village, affectionately referred to as "Old Town" is just an
enchanting place. The original brick buildings and village "feel", will take
you back to that place in time where today's common stresses don't exist.
The Givens Memorial Library and The Tufts archives, at the edge of the
Village, is a must visit while you're here. Take a carriage
ride through the village, and you'll begin to get a sense of just how
special this "place in time" is.
The quaint shops, restaurants and businesses here operate on Pinehurst time. The people are warm and friendly,
and you can find some of the most incredible collectibles here. The
majestic homes
and surroundings remain mostly unchanged from when the Village was started
in the
1800's. A plan is also in early stages to return the
common area, in the center of the Village square, to what was
envisioned by
Olmsted years ago. This area has always been an open space blanketed with
pine needles and provided the stage for the beautiful homes and original
buildings of The Village of Pinehurst. The plan calls for more usable space,
where the residents and visitors will be able to gather in a
natural "usable" environment. Every surrounding area here feels like a park anyway.
This golf mecca has entertained the best players in golf
since 1895. The courses have created
an incredibly beautiful place to live, where golf is not just a past time,
it's a way of life. There are some
40
championship courses within a 20 minute radius, here in the Sandhills,
and 8 courses that are part of the Pinehurst Country Club.
Donald Ross made Pinehurst his headquarters for some 40 years, after
redesigning Pinehurst #2 in 1901. Other designers here include Fazio,
Nicklaus, Dan and Ellis Maples, Gene Hamm, Peter Tufts, and Arnold Palmer.
When you talk with any PGA professional or tour player, and you mention
Pinehurst, often you'll notice that wry smile and notice how their face
lights up. It's just that special, and has been for over 100 years.
There are nearly 12,000 residents here, coming from all
over the world. Up until 1990, the majority of the population was primarily
retirees, with an average age of 60. Since 1990, an influx of younger
residents and families has changed the growth pattern quite a bit. This
historical golf mecca
offers so many different options for each family size and budget, it's a
great place for families of all sizes to live and thrive. Even though there
are several homes in and around the Village of Pinehurst core that run from
$500K to $4M, there are also great neighborhoods, in Pinehurst's surrounding
area, with homes in the $180K to $400K range, surrounded by
parks and tons
of natural, preserved beauty. There are also several well known
gated
communities and
golf
communities, in and around Pinehurst that offer unbelievable amenities and
real estate.
Pinehurst
Country Club is comprised of the club, pools, tennis facilities, The
Pinehurst Spa, Pinehurst Lake, and 8 world renowned championship golf
courses. Membership is required to use Pinehurst Resort facilities, and not
all property includes a membership. For
properties that have an active
membership, a small transfer fee is paid when you buy the property, to
transfer it to your name. Many frequent visitors often pick up cheaper lots,
with a membership just to access all that Pinehurst has to offer. While
membership to Pinehurst is an incredible benefit of owning property here, it
is not required to own property. Although, you must own property, to have a
Pinehurst membership.
There are several other options for staying in Pinehurst during your visit.
The
Holly Inn, the area's first hotel has
world class accommodations and service.
Twenty guests paid $3 each to stay here on New Year's Eve in 1895 and
welcomed in the New Year at Pinehurst Resort. Since then they've hosted
everyone from presidents, dignitaries, celebrities, etc. There are many
other fine facilities that offer
packages with
golf as well as lodging. Pine Crest Inn,
Manor Inn, The Carolina Hotel, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, all world class
facilities that have been around from very early on in
Pinehurst's
history.
As
Pinehurst continues to grow, the feel and character of this incredible
town will not change. It's warmth and history have been carefully preserved
to maintain the community that we love, and measures remain in place to
continue this preservation. Once you've been here once, you'll understand
what everyone else here does. There's just no place like Pinehurst.
