Hyland Hills Golf Club
Hyland Hills Golf Club is perched atop the area's highest
elevation, with tall pines, sparkling blue water and sweeping panoramic views
forming a perfect backdrop for 18 of the finest holes ever designed by Tom
Jackson. This "no frills, no gimmicks" golf course is always in great condition
and has been enjoyed by golfers of all abilities since 1973.
Hyland Hills Golf Club is a hilly layout directly on Highway 1 within minutes of
Southern Pines and Pinehurst. It is a Tom Jackson design that gets a lot of local play. A good course in good
condition, Hyland Hills clubhouse won't bowl you over with its appearance, but
the course is well maintained by a staff led by Director of Golf, Doug Thompson.
Hyland Hills Golf Club was built with a
minimalist style, leaving the ground and terrain pretty much as it was.
It's a parkland style course with elevated tees and greens, and mostly an open feel.
The views and panoramic of pines, azaleas and dogwoods, will remind you of
Augusta National. The course can play to a 138 slope and 6,970 yards from the
tips. The greens are large, multi-tiered, and quick, and there's 60 bunkers
mostly around the greens.
Maintenance is the key to success in this business," said Thompson, "and
service. You've got to treat the customer well. We will go to any length to make
sure that when he steps on this property he will be welcomed and we will see to
it that when he leaves, he will be glad he came."
We know our niche. Sure, we would like to get the high-end part of the market,
but we pull no punches about it - we are a mid-range golf course and without
question we are the best in that niche in the county."
"There are no blind holes on this golf course," Thompson went on. "You can see
everything in front of you. We have some nice elevation changes and some water.
The layout is conducive to an efficient
round. We don't have a hard and fast
rule about pace of play but we want everyone to get around in no more than 4
hours and a quarter."
There are a lot of elevated tee boxes, or at least downhill tee shots, and
you'll get your fair share of unlevel lies. There are also a few very
challenging water shots, although there are not too many hazards on the course
overall. The greens are always soft, so good approach shots stay that way.
The view across the green at #3 is spectacular. The golf course is built around
the twin lakes. The "bowl effect" lets the player enjoy the elevation changes,
creating the need for all your golf clubs that is synonymous with Hyland Hills
Golf Club.
The course is user friendly but it isn't a pushover. Standing out among some
nice holes is the 10th, a par 3 of 180 yards to a flat green almost entirely
surrounded by bunkers with long grass. The green complex reminded me of some of
the holes, like No. 16 at Merion. The finishing hole is a sharp dogleg left of
375 yards that completed a very nice 18.
Most average golfers will enjoy
Hyland Hills Golf
Club and it won't lighten your wallet
too much either.
