Deercroft Golf Club
Deercroft Golf Club, often described as the “Sandhills’ best kept
secret”, was the
home of the PGA and Senior PGA Qualifying Rounds in 1986 and
1987. Deercroft
Golf Club, nestled in the heart of the Sandhills’ 10,000-acre wildlife refuge,
has also been called the “sleeper” of the Sandhills since opening in 1983.
The fairways are rolling and lush, and the greens putt true. In
addition, the greens are well bunkered. Several long shots over water are
required while playing this course. Deercroft has a 90 acre lake that winds
through the community.
Deercroft , now a 4 star golf course from Golf Digest, is a bit off the beaten path, and because
of it’s location, Deercroft doesn’t get the attention some of the courses
in the Sandhills area receive.
However, once golfers journey south
on 15-501 they stumble upon a course that has been well received by golfers for
years. So well that Golfweek ranked Deercroft Golf Club in it’s top 50 courses
for 5 straight years.
The 18-hole "Deercroft" course features 6,566 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The
course rating is 72.1 and it has a slope rating of 130 on Bermuda grass.
Designed by Gardner Gildey, the Deercroft golf club course opened in 1983. And although it's a bit more out of the way than some of the other courses in the
Pinehurst area, Deercroft offers a wonderful round of golf and is a course
you’ll find yourself returning to again and again.
The course is impeccably maintained and the setting is great for a relaxing
getaway. Deercroft isn't all that long, but accuracy is demanded by the pine
trees lining the fairways which love to slap down
errant tee shots.
Shot placement is important on several holes as well. On my first couple of rounds
here I fired off some blistering drives that left me feeling pretty good, only
to find myself without a direct line to the green and forced to lay up with a
wedge."
Carved from magnificent pine forests, Deercroft offers one of the most
scenic and challenging tests of shot making in the North Carolina Sandhills.
Golf Digest has featured Deercroft Golf Club in their bi-annual "Places to Play
Guide".
The credentials speak for themselves. Deercroft is not a terribly difficult course, if you keep the ball in play. And
at less than thirty bucks including cart, it's a great place to bring your
buddies for the weekly game. Definitely worth the extra ten or fifteen minute
drive.
