CCNC Golf
CCNC golf has two courses, designed by the late-great legendary Ellis Maples,
listed in the top 20 NC courses. The Dogwood Course has substantial elevation
changes around a massive and beautiful lake. The Dogwood and Cardinal courses both sweep around the clear 64-acre natural
Watson's Lake, and through 1,850 acres of classic longleaf pine forests.
Ellis was not one to move a ton of dirt, so these courses do not feel
manufactured at all. Mr. Maples only asks you to manufacture some golf shots
(both left and right) to go really low. If you are a higher handicapper, it is
just a beautiful meandering day through the pines with the course right in front
of you (250ish drives only need avoid the occasional bunkering).
CCNC golf is
the “retreat club” for many members who play here every other month or so. These
tracks have low traffic so they stay in great shape.
Designed by Ellis Maples and Willard Byrd and opened in 1963,
the Dogwood course was the site of the 1980 U.S. Amateur Championship (won by
Hal Sutton) and has also hosted six Southern Amateurs, seven North Carolina
Amateurs and three Carolinas Amateurs events.
The CCNC Dogwood course has been the venue for many championship events
including three Carolinas Amateurs, six Southern Amateurs and the 1980 USGA
Amateur. Nine holes of the Cardinal course opened in 1970, with the second nine
completed in 1981.
Both courses are ranked in the top 15 in North Carolina.
The 18-hole "Dogwood" course at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst
features 7,154 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course
rating is 74.9 and it has a slope rating of 137 on Bermuda grass.
The 18-hole "Cardinal" course at CCNC features 7,000 yards of golf from the
longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 74.2 and it has a slope
rating of 138 on
Bermuda grass. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and
Willard C. Byrd, the Cardinal golf course opened in 1970.
As one plays the CCNC golf courses it is easy to forget that the Country Club of
North Carolina is a thriving residential community. The homes do not intrude
upon the natural beauty or landscape of the golf courses. There are no dwelling
lots less than an acre, and on the Cardinal course there is a large area where
the individual home lots are at least 5 acres.
The Country Club of North Carolina's Dogwood Course in Pinehurst, NC Will Host
the 2010 U.S. Girl's Junior Championship
The USGA announced a few months back that CCNC golf in Pinehurst, N.C., will host the
2010 U.S. Girl's; Junior Championship. The dates of the championship will be July
19-24, 2010. The Far Hills, NJ based USGA made the announcement in
February and the reaction was as you'd expect, "The members of CCNC are excited
and honored to host the 2010 U.S. Girls Junior Championship," said Dr. John N.
Ellis, club president.
"It will have been 30 years since the U.S. Amateur was
played on our Dogwood course, and we are very pleased to welcome back the USGA
for another championship. The Dogwood course is well known for its beauty and
challenge, and we are confident that the players will find the course a
demanding but enjoyable test of their skills."
